September got its name during the time when the first month of the calendar was March in Roman Calendar. The term September came into existence from a Latin word Septem which translates to “Seven” in English. It was because September was 7th month of year at that time. It is the last chance for the students to go on trips before their summer vacations finish. Many students organize parties also on this day to do some enjoyment before the start of school.
On the eve of Labor Day, many people display firework shows, public arts and organize sports events and barbecues also. The American football Season also starts on or around this day. Many football teams play their season’s first game during the Labor Day weekend.
Most of the events people organize on this day are low key events. It’s because it’s the last opportunity for them to go on summer trips. Roads are a little crowded on Labor day and hence the public transit is usually late.
The first ever celebrations of Labor Day occurred in 1882. Central Labor Union showed interest for first time in creating a holiday especially in honor of labors. That’s how the stems of Labor Day originated. Later, it became a federal holiday after 12 years in 1894.
Originally, labor day was meant to have a street parade so that the people can acknowledge the contribution of trade and labor organizations to the nation’s economy. A festival was also meant to be held after the parade to amuse the families of local workers. Later, many prominent men and women started giving speeches also on this day. These things are very uncommon today but sometimes seen in election time.
The United States celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday of September month every year while the rest of the world celebrate it on May 1. It’s so to provide the people with an extra holiday with the weekend. There is a long gap in holidays between Independence Day which is on 4 July and Thanksgiving which is on the fourth Thursday in the month of November. In order to fill this gap, Labor day’s celebrations occur on the first Monday of September.
